THE EARTHQUAKE AND THE SAFETY OF BUILDINGS
The earthquake produces the agitation of ground, which transfers to the foundation of building. The building iis forced to oscillate.
The vertical amid the horizontal component of the earthquake-force is to be considered, but usually the
damage on building is caused by the horizontal component only.
The vigour of the horizontal force depends on the coefficient of the earthquake-chock E in «/*, which denotes the horizontal force in percentage of the weigh of the building.
Considering the intensity, the earthquakes may be ranged in twelve degrees M. C. S.
The intensity of the earthquake in the same country is smaller in the rocky region than in gravel, clay or moorland.
The calculation of effect of qu arih quake introduces the horizontal forces, determined by the ooef-fioent of earthquake-shock and by the geoilogycal formation of ground.
Besides it is necessary to take into account the resonant oscillation of the building.
The author gives the summary of Jugoslav, Czeko-slovalkiain, German and Italian regulations of building in earthquake-regions and he describes the intensity and the frequency of the earthquakes in Slovenia.
The author concludes, the prescribed horizontal earthquake-forces in the Jugoslav regulations of 1946 underestimated. He proposes 'the following 'horizontal earthquake-forces in Ljubljana and in the places, where the intensity of the earthquake reaches IX—X degree M. C. S.
The short buildings should be calculated by considering the horizontal earthquake-force of 5—10°/» of the weigh aind the tale building with 10—15 %».
The percentage should variate according the gco-logycal formation of the ground.
The buildings, calculated with the increased horizontal earthquake-forces would resist better the airraid and the atombomb.
