A research of the bearing capacity of membranes

Synopsis
After a brief introduction the models of the membranes of rectangular and quadrangular shape, which have been investigated are discribed. The aim of the research was to find out the behavior of the loaded membranes and their bearing capacity, as well as to find out an adequate treatment for the design. An interpretation of the experimental results and their comparision with theoretical results is given. The theoretical results in general do not agree with the experimental ones. The theorie of elasticity is valid only to the first plastic deformations in a narrow zone at the beginning of the application of load. The rela-
tion between the load and strain, as well as the relation between the load and the stress, remain practically linear not only in the elastic but also in the plastic zone. This is expressed the more, the thinner the membrane. Such ascertaining makes it possible to use the method of Maria Eslinger for practical desing of rectangulare membranes at the supposition that the center of the membrane becomes completly plastifi-cated. This is the only method which gives satisfactory results for all thicknesses of the membrane, which have been included in the program of the research.
