TRAFFIC AND TECHNICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED EXPRESSWAY ŠENTILJ - GORICA

TRAFFIC AND TECHNICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED EXPRESSWAY ŠENTILJ—GORICA
Synopsis
The prospective expressway Šentilj—Ljubljana— Gorica follows the route of the international road E-93 and forms the integral part of Yugoslav road network. The existing road has a total length of
264,7 km and the new expressway a length of 253,3 km. The air-line Šentilj—Gorica has a length of 174,6 km. The percentage ratio of the length of the new route to the air-line would be as 45 °/o.
The elements and superstructure of the existing road are very bad. The average travel speed between Šentilj and Gorica is at present about 60 km/h, what would be impossible for a long traffic.
The route of the prospective expressway chiefly follows the existent road Šentilj—Maribor—Celje— Ljubljana—Postojna—Razdrto—Gorica with a junction in Postojna for Reka and a junction in Razdrto for Koper and Trst. The geological situation of the route is the following: 30 per cent of the soil is of good quality, 19 per cent intermediate, 31 per cent bad and 20 per cent of very bad quality.
In projecting of the route the speeds are estimated to be 140 km/h, 120 km/h, 100 km/h in flat, hilly and mountaineous areas respectively.
The route will reguire about 23 260 000 m3 or 93 m3/ml of excavated material, about 19 484 000 m3 or 77 rrfV'ml of embankment material, about 4 620 000 m3 or 18m3/ml of tampon material and 5 119 000 m2 of the area coated with asphalt.
The costs of the complete construction are estimated to be 3' 665 millions N din or 14,7 millions N din/ lkm.
Many analyses on the effect of the new road on the economy have been made. The bearing interests resulting solely from the trafic, without savings from the maintaining of the road and light damage due to the accidents, will attain the interested investment in about 10 to 12 years.
A proposal is made to construct a four lane automobile expressway Šentilj—Gorica with the junctions for Reka, Koper and Trst. The first stage should comprise the sections Vrhnika—Postojna and Slivnica —Levec with a total lenght of 85,5 km and estimated costs of 1 075,7 million N din.
