The Skopje earthquake of july 26, 1963 A summary report

The study of the Skopje earthquake so far shows that the destructive ground movements were of a shock type and that these were connected with small epicentral distances of shallow earthquakes occuring in regions characterised by a mosaic structure. These movements of the ground seem to be due to the mass movement caused by the re-adjustment of the tectonic block upon which Skopje stands, perhaps coupled with
the onset of the transverse waves. The shock showed abnormally high ground accelerations, unusual for its magnitude. The complete duration of the earthquake was less than 5 seconds. The destructive part of the ground motion was definitely unidirectional and it did not last more than a few tenths of a second. This type of ground movement makes it very difficult to assign (MM) intensity grades.
