COATING OF THE COFFER-DAM AT KOKIN BROD WITH ASPHALT

COATING OF THE COFFER-DAM AT KOKIN BROD WITH ASPHALT
Summary
The road construction enterprise »Slovenija ceste« executed in 1959 ticklish asphalting works at the stone coffer-dam at Uvac river at Radojna near Kokin Brod in the People’s Republic of Serbia. The sensitive point has been the steepness of the 36 m high porous concrete, constituting the basis of the asphalt, of as much as 51 to 55». The task was to stick two layers of asphalt concrete of 9 cm total thickness on the porous concrete. For this purpose, a special finishing machine and a vibrating roller were made in the mechanical workshop of the enterprise, and they were suspended on steel wire ropes of 10 mm thickness held by special winches, set up on a travelling device on the dam crest, wich carried them upward on the wall. The temperature of the asphalt-concrete mixture at the moment of incorporation had to be 140° to 150° C, a mixture of a tempe-
rature below 140» C being too- tough for the purpose, and a mixture warmer than 150° C not remaining on the spot. The »Research Laboratory for material and constructions« at Ljubljana investigated this matter and determined the right mixture of asphalt concrete which does not leak and which possesses the property of repairing itself, if there should be a crack.
After a considerable effort, the enterprise succeeded in terminating the work until the end of 1959 and to commence the operation of the coffer-dam until the time-limit. According toi obtained informations, this case of coating with asphalt at such steepness is the first one in Europe.
The coffer-dam has since been in operation during three years without leaking.
