ADDITION OPERATIONS ON A LOGARITHMIC SLIDE RULE

In an optional position of two equal logarithmic slide rule scales the totals of readings on one scale and those of the corresponding reading on the other scale cover each other. On the basis of this statement the total of two summands can be reduced so that one of them is 1 or a decade unit 10, 100 etc. That is the essential point of the calculation resp. of the simplification. By means of the reduced total on one scale the proper total on the other is read.
In practice this process is applied in complex calcula-

tions resp. in function combinations (for instance | a3 + b3). In this way, for instance, four separate operations can be carried out without interruption or recording and chiefly with considerable saving of time. This method can be applied on every standard logarithmic slide rule.
The paper also gives general schemes for various quoted calculi.
